To Be A Tantrik (Part 1)
Being a tantrik means walking the path of the heart. It means allowing yourself to be wildly open and vulnerable and free. Tantrists exist in balance between the energies of earth and sky, of sun and moon, of the spiritual vs mundane. Life itself is a spiritual experience. Whether deep in meditation, invoking powerful manifestation & Godhead energies through sexual union, or driving a car, paying bills, cooking dinner for the family- the Tantric path recognizes that all acts are synchronous and divine.
On a deeper level, everything is perfect- too. This is a concept that's hard to process in the midst of turbulent times. We can meditate on this concept of perfection with the Purna Mantra which translates to "This is perfect, that is perfect. From the perfect springs the perfect. Take the perfect from the perfect and only the perfect remains."
ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात्पुर्णमुदच्यते "Om Purnamadah Purnamidam Purnat Purnamudachyate
पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥ Purnasya Purnamadaya Purnamevavashisyate.
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥ Om shanti shanti shanti.
To follow a Tantrik path means to be in harmony with life. To exist within a flow state. To accept perfection even in the "darker" moments. To recognize that darkness, too, is an essential musical note in the song of existence. To let go of resistance to what is.
It means to perceive oneself as an instrument which is being finely tuned. In this tuning, existence becomes our sweetest song.
Tantrists aim to maximize their own potential as human beings.
We are magicians , and we are mystics. We long for unity yet step out into the world, powerfully claiming what we desire. We believe in the divinity of desire, too. In Tantra- the idea is not to drop desire, but to transform it.
"You are what your deep, driving desire is. As your desire is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny." - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad.
We are the creators of our destiny. You won't find us hum drumming through life , wishing things were different and not taking action to change them. We are powerful change makers and shape shifters. We create and rearrange the energetic blueprint of reality. We aim to do so in harmony with, and not in opposition to spirit.
We believe that the spirit which enlivens our own being is the same force which flows throughout the entire cosmos. That each individual is a microcosm of the macrocosm. As above, so below. As within, so without. What is here, is elsewhere- what is not here, is nowhere.
On the one hand our goal is not to transcend the body, but to live freely and fully within in it. Our bodies are divine instruments. We are here to thrive. On the other hand, we recognize our own nothingness , we are familiar with the blackness of the void and know that relationship with Kali Ma brings us deeper into this realization. Tantriks tend to have a certain fascination with death for this reason.
Tantra is a path, a lifestyle, a way of being. Over time, a Tantrik fully embodies his or her practices & beliefs, and continuously moves toward alignment with his or her own highest truth. A fully activated Tantrik serves as a living embodiment to the teachings.
Perhaps the most compelling truth of Tantra is that it's different for everyone. My truth is not your truth. My way is not your way- and I respect your path just as much as my own. Ask any tantrist what their definition of Tantra is - and theirs will be different than mine. That, in itself, is a beautiful thing.
